Harper Lee was an American novelist whose debut novel To Kill a Mockingbird earned her the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and cemented her place in literary history. Born in Monroeville, Alabama, Lee drew inspiration from her own upbringing and community for much of her work. She also assisted her lifelong friend Truman Capote in research for his nonfiction classic In Cold Blood.
